TMJ
Jaw Pain Treatment

TMJ or TMD refers to disorders of the temporomandibular joint – the joint that hinges the lower jaw to the skull. This joint, along with several other muscles in this area, work in harmony to help you chew, speak, and swallow. When the joint is misaligned, sometimes caused by grinding or clenching the teeth, you might have TMD disorder.

Causes of TMD include injury to the jaw, grinding or clenching of the teeth, arthritis in the joint, or stress.

Symptoms of TMD include:

  • Tenderness of the jaw
  • Clicking or popping noises when opening the mouth
  • Limited ability to open your mouth wide
  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Earache
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Sinus problems

TMJ Treatment

Some treatments for TMD include muscle relaxants, ant inflammatory medications, biofeedback, or wearing a night guard in your mouth while you sleep. In more extreme cases,  if a misaligned bite is the problem a dentist can create a treatment plan to correct your bite. The solution could be using orthodontics or restorative procedures such as crown and bridge work to help bring your bite into a natural position. TMJ treatment can alleviate symptoms long-term.
