Implant
Restorations

Missing teeth are more than just cosmetically unappealing – they can lead to other health issues. The loss of chewing function, the inability to eat a complete diet, and most devastatingly, bone loss can occur. Missing teeth can cause other teeth to wear prematurely and coupled with bone loss, can cause the face to appear “sunken” and older than it is.

If you have missing teeth, uncomfortable dentures, or don’t want to remove existing tooth structure to create a dental bridge, dental implant restorations are an alternative to tooth replacement. Implants provide a foundation for replacement teeth that can be made to match your natural teeth. Dental implants can be used to replace one missing tooth or an entire set of missing teeth by supporting a fixed denture or bridge.

Advantages to Implant Restorations

There are many benefits to implant restorations:

  • Closest thing to natural teeth
  • Strong, stable, durable
  • Virtually undetectable from natural teeth
  • Provide better chewing ability
  • Help prevent jaw joint problems
  • Superior to dentures

Disadvantages to Implant Restorations

The disadvantages associated with dental implants are minimal, especially when compared to the alternative, dentures. Implants do require surgery, time to heal, and a higher initial cost.

Implant Restoration Procedure

During the dental implant restoration procedure, a dental implant is surgically placed in the jawbone and a crown is placed on top of the implant. If you are missing an entire row of teeth, implants can be used to secure a full set of dentures or permanent bridge.

Your new tooth or teeth will match the color of your existing teeth, making the fact that you have dental implants unnoticeable. The surgical implant must heal before the final placement of the crown, denture or bridge – the healing process takes about six months.

Am I A Candidate for Dental Implants?

Anyone who has missing teeth due to gum disease, tooth decay, or injury and is in generally good health is usually a good candidate for dental implant restorations. A dentist will need to determine if you have enough available bone for the procedure.
